"Hello." "Hello, we are from the local population committee. We came to check who lives here". The reputation of the Palestinian population committees was notorious. In fact, it was a way, or more accurately, a process, to re-populate the Arab families of "old boys" in those apartments in Tel-Aviv and its vicinity, which were found to be suitable. A year earlier, an Arab family from a refugee camp in Gaza moved into the apartment above, from which a senior citizen, a Holocaust survivor, was evicted. Fortunately a family which lived on the next block and which knew him, graciously gave him a more or less permanent place to stay. The re-settlement process included only the families of cronies, key people in the Palestinian Authority and Israeli Arabs, while most citizens of the Palestinian State continued to live in squalid refugee camps, in fact, without change. The Palestinian state continued to stoke hatred towards the thieving Jews. "Who lives here?" "Only me." "How many rooms are in the apartment?" "Two and a half. This apartment is registered in my name in the Land Registry." The two Palestinian policemen who came with the representatives of the population committee, a man and a woman, walked through the apartment and poked around, looking for interesting things. The committee people spent a long time filling out forms. Thereafter they huddled in a corner of a room and whispered while Eli sat in his wheelchair, pretending not to hear them speak. They did not know that as a child he had spoken fluent Arabic with his parents and cousins. In the eyes of the committee people, Eli seemed like easy prey, until he sweetly turned to them and said in fluent Arabic: "Why don't you throw me out on to the street right now? Or better yet, shoot me! After all, I am a helpless handicapped person!? What could be easier than throwing me out of my apartment?! After all, I can't harm you!?" The woman averted her gaze downwards but the eyes of the man filled with blood. That's all folks |
